ABSTRACT

Background: E-learning platforms have become essential tools for modern education, yet their adoption among undergraduate students varies based on several factors. Understanding these factors is crucial for enhancing online learning experiences. This study explores the key factors influencing the adoption of e-learning platforms for online classes among undergraduate students in Jigawa State, Nigeria. The research is grounded in the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology (UTAUT), extended with digital literacy and technophobia to reflect the local context.

Methodology: The study employed a survey research design using a structured online questionnaire for data collection. The research was conducted at Federal University Dutse and Sule Lamido University, Kafin Hausa, with 238 undergraduate students as respondents. A pretest was carried out to validate the research instrument for reliability and content validity. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS and PLS-SEM to assess measurement and structural models.

Findings/Results: The study found that social influence, digital literacy, and facilitating conditions significantly impact students' intention to adopt e-learning. However, technophobia was found to have an insignificant relationship with e-learning adoption. These findings indicate that students are more likely to embrace e-learning when they have digital skills, supportive environments, and positive social influence.

Implication: The results highlight the need for interventions to enhance digital literacy, improve access to technological resources, and leverage social influence to encourage e-learning adoption. University administrators and educators must prioritize infrastructure development and digital training to support this transition.

Conclusion: The study confirms that social influence, digital literacy, and facilitating conditions are key drivers of e-learning adoption, while technophobia does not significantly hinder students' willingness to engage with online learning platforms.

Recommendations: Universities should enhance digital literacy programs to improve student competence in using e-learning platforms, invest in technological infrastructure to ensure adequate access to e-learning resources, conducted t awareness campaigns o leverage social influence in promoting e-learning adoption, and expand the research scope by including more universities across multiple states and incorporating qualitative approaches for deeper insights into adoption challenges
