ABSTRACT
This study used a descriptive survey design to examine the uses and challenges of open-source software KOHA in academic libraries. A population of 62 library staff members was randomly selected from five higher institutions in the Adamawa Central Senatorial Zone which included two universities federal and private one polytechnic state and two colleges federal and state. Data was collected through a questionnaire and the results were analyzed using frequency distribution tables and percentages. The hypothesis of this study was that the implementation of open-source software like KOHA in academic libraries would face several operational challenges including insufficient manpower inadequate funding and lack of infrastructure. The study found that academic libraries in the Adamawa Central Senatorial Zone increasingly rely on open-source software particularly KOHA. However the libraries face several challenges including insufficient manpower staff apathy inadequate funding and a lack of proper infrastructure which hinder the effective utilization of open-source software. The study concluded that open-source software such as KOHA is valuable for academic library management but its full potential is not being realized due to various operational challenges. Based on the findings the study recommends that library management focus on improving internet bandwidth ensuring reliable power sources such as inverters or solar energy solutions and providing adequate staff training. These actions will help maximize the benefits of open-source software in academic libraries.rn
