Social Capital and Knowledge Sharing Between Librarians In Academic Libraries In Gombe State

ABSTRACT
This study investigated social capital and knowledge sharing between librarians in academic libraries in Gombe State. The objectives of the study are to determine the factors that contribute to social capital among librarians to determine the type of knowledge shared among librarians in academic libraries in Gombe State to ascertain the perceived benefits of knowledge sharing among librarians and to identify challenges affecting knowledge sharing among librarians in academic libraries in Gombe State. A descriptive research design and questionnaire were employed for data collection using a 4-point scale. The study population comprises eighty-one 81 academic and non-academic librarians in the academic libraries covered in the study area. A census sampling technique involving all 81 librarians was used to measure the sample size. Data collected was analyzed using simple percentages and mean scores while inferential statistics using the t-test was used to test the hypotheses. The study hypothesizes that factors such as team meetings and shared objectives contribute to social capital among librarians and that knowledge sharing improves overall library service quality. The findings revealed that the levels of social capital among librarians in the study were high and also showed that factors such as team meetings and shared objectives contribute to social capital among librarians. The findings also revealed that study practices are common knowledge shared among the respondents and that knowledge sharing improves overall library service quality. On the other hand it revealed that time constraints and fear of competition are among the barriers to knowledge sharing. The study concludes that social capital among librarians is high and that team meetings and shared objectives significantly contribute to it. Knowledge sharing practices are common and beneficial but barriers such as time constraints and fear of competition exist. The study recommended that librarians should organize regular team-building exercises and social events that encourage librarians to build stronger professional and personal relationships.
