ABSTRACT

Background: The integration of artificial intelligence into libraries has revolutionised information services. This change brings up important moral questions, particularly in regards to finding a balance between privacy, security, and accessibility. To ensure that AI technologies are in line with their core values of equality, intellectual freedom, and public trust, libraries must overcome these challenges as respectable institutions. In order to minimise bias and exclusion, this paper examines the ethical implications of AI in libraries, emphasising the necessity of strong privacy safeguards, secure data practices, and inclusive design.

Method: This study evaluates the body of research, policy papers, and case studies on AI ethics in libraries using a critical review methodology. The assessment looks at how major ethical issues, such as privacy concerns, security flaws, and accessibility restrictions, affect library services and patron confidence. The method also identifies research gaps, like the absence of empirical studies on the impact of AI on user privacy in developing countries and explicit ethical principles for AI governance in libraries.

Findings: The findings indicate that integrating AI raises significant ethical concerns even as it increases productivity and enhances user experiences. The acquisition and use of sensitive user data raise privacy issues due to the possibility of misuse and unauthorised access. Concerns about accessibility arise from the potential exclusion of disadvantaged populations. The study also cites information gaps, including the need for consistent ethical frameworks to govern AI use in libraries and the paucity of research on AI bias and its effects on marginalised populations.

Conclusion: The study comes to the conclusion that a comprehensive strategy that puts accessibility, security, and privacy first is necessary for the ethical application of AI in libraries. To promote trust and accountability, libraries must also actively develop policies, provide ongoing training for employees, and involve the community. This study encourages a comprehensive approach to AI integration in libraries, highlighting the need for ethical frameworks, interdisciplinary collaboration, and continuous assessment to guarantee that AI technologies serve as tools for inclusion and empowerment in the digital age.
